Nothing is broken, and that is the problem

20 October 2026

When we sit with a business for the first time, the owner usually apologises for the mess. Almost always there is no mess. Every record exists. The software was paid for and it works.

The cost is somewhere else, and it is invisible because nothing records it.

Four places, one question

Where is this. Who handled it. Was it paid. Each answer sits in a system, and reaching it means opening two or three screens and remembering what something was called.

Do that thirty times in a morning and the morning is gone. No timesheet captures it, so when somebody asks where the time went, nobody can point at anything.

Why it grows quietly

Every tool was a reasonable decision on the day it was bought. The accounting system, the spreadsheet, the folder of signed documents. None of them was wrong. They simply never had a reason to speak to each other.

So the business grows, and the number of places you have to look grows with it.

What changes

A question should be answerable from the screen you are already looking at. Not another system on top of the old ones, but one place where the work already is, with the answers brought to it.
